GENE C. DRESSER, 78 LAKE SUMMERSET - Gene C. Dresser, 78, of Lake
Summerset passed away at 6:39 a.m. Friday, June 22, 2007, at Rockford Memorial
Hospital after a brief illness. Born Feb. 16, 1929, in Rockford, the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Armour and Helen (Baxter) Dresser. Married the former Evelyn I. Mellor Sept. 9,
1950, in Lindenwood. They lived 21 years in Lake Summerset, coming here from
Stillman Valley. Gene was a lifelong farmer in Ogle County and was a production
control manager for Barber Colman Company, retiring in 1985. Member of Trinity
Lutheran Church, Durand, associate member of Christ the King Lutheran Church,
Sebastian, Fla., president of Pelican Pointe III Homeowners Assoc. in Sebastian, and
former member of Stillman Valley Lions Club, where he served as president. Gene
graduated from Monroe Center (Ill.) High School, class of 1947, and attended Wheaton College. Gene
enjoyed gardening and woodcarving having won several awards and was featured in "Chip Chats" magazine.
He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He was active in sports in his early years, particularly baseball. He was
invited to tryout for the Chicago Cubs in the late 1940s and enjoyed coaching Little League and youth
baseball teams in the 1960s. He was a lifelong Chicago White Sox fan as well as an avid Chicago Bulls fan.
He enjoyed public speaking and served as emcee at numerous retirement parties and events as well as
auctioneering charity events. He and his wife loved to travel and visited China, Australia, New Zealand,
Europe, Alaska and the Fiji Islands. Survivors include wife, Evelyn Dresser, Lake Summerset; daughter,
Marcia Strothoff, Rockford; son, Steven (Dawn) Dresser, Charlotte, N.C.; daughter, Marlene (Deryl) Carter,
Elgin; son, Stewart (Sandy) Dresser, Stillman Valley; daughter, Marcy (John) Carey, Rockford; 14
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; special nephew, Alan Schabacker; and numerous nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Robert. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m.
Monday, June 25, in Trinity Lutheran Church, 15585 Durand Road, Durand, with the Rev. R. Lee and Kathy
Whitney-Bennight, pastors, co-officiating. Burial in Monroe Center Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m.
Sunday, June 24, in McCorkle Funeral Home, 101 Main St., Durand. Memorials may be made to Trinity
Lutheran Church, Durand, Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1301 Sebastian Blvd., Sebastian, FL 32958 or
